Vizo Ninja HS Review

Posted on 23 June 2009 by Alexander A.T. Rainville

065 The Vizo Ninja HS notebook cooler caught our eye with its adjustable fan location. Combined with silent fans, decent adjustability, good build and some fun DIY, this cooler has proven itself to be one of the better coolers on the market and has surely surpassed our expectations.

First Impressions
At first we were a bit puzzled by the thin exterior packaging, but quickly found the cooler encased in styrofoam within a second firmer box. Inside we found the parts for the cooler as well as a USB A to B cable to power the cooler from your notebook. Also included was an instruction manual which explained how to align your notebook with the cooler.

The cooler parts and cable

While visually analyzing the cooler, we noticed how the solid metal material provided a very robust build. We went ahead and plugged it in before assembling the entire cooler together in order to get a rough idea of the audibility of the fans which were near silent.

The Cooling Surface, Cooling System and the DIY

We highly recommend you check out the flash demo here from Vizo to get an idea of the adjustability and other animated visual descriptions.

We started off by building the cooler. With its tool-less design, the cooler was relatively simply to assemble. Initially, we assembled the parts loosely and then we adjusted the fans’ depth; we proceeded to putting the cooler upside down on our test notebook in order to confirm the depth then adjust the fans left/right. We aligned one of the fans over the notebook intake vent and the other on a hotspot.

The cooling surface itself is built from mainly metal mesh. The fans are ideally located but it is restricted to the rear half of a notebook. The front half is bare and allows free airflow. There are no rubber feet to hold the notebook, though there is a metal “bit” less than a centimeter from the front that holds the notebook up on the cooler.

The cooling system is simple but effective due to the adjustable fans. The Ninja HS sucks air from the base and forces it out the metal mesh with decent flow and in near silence.

The Sides
The left side is rather bare but when we turn to the right, we see where the action really is. The right side of the cooler is equipped with 3 USB ports and a USB Female port. We also liked the eco-friendly low material design which really shows from the sides. Vizo designed the cooler such that the cut sides help add a unique motif to the cooler.

On a last note the typing angle provided is not great but it is good

There are rubber feet on the base to hold the cooler in place, though on the rear, Vizo included a wheel on each side which allows the user to lift up the cooler, with or without a notebook and slide the notebook back or forwards which we believe is a great feature.

Also located on the underside is where you can unscrew and adjust the fans when required.

Although the backside is lacking in ports, the design keeps it from appearing boring.

Portability
Although we could not categorize the cooler as portable, it is light and mobile enough for home/office use. We caution users when moving the cooler, as the screws only loosely hold the fans to the cooler in place.  To remedy this we recommend users use a screw driver to secure the screws for the side legs.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we must admit we love the cooler and its features. The adjustability is key to our fondness; the near silent fans, cooling performance, and other positive features are great bonuses. We believe the cooler could have been slightly more stable on the horizontal axis (left and right) without using a tool. Nevertheless, the Vizo Ninja HS is among the best choices of notebook coolers on the market and can be used among different notebooks models.
