Laptop Lifts Review

Posted on 17 November 2009 by Alexander A.T. Rainville

DSC_0009 Unlike many cooling solutions on the market, Laptop Lifts are unforgettably unique. Held onto your notebook with a powerful adhesive, Laptop Lifts passively cool notebooks by elevating them to increase airflow.

First Impressions

Arriving in a clear plastic packaging, the Laptop Lifts extrude out the front of the package. On the rear, precise and accurate but short product and installation instructions as well as warnings are printed. (We will look at installation in depth, in the following section.)

The clear plastic required a bit of a struggle to open and scissors are necessary. However once the packaging is open, things become far easier. Fresh out of the package, the rubber feet felt soft and comfortable. Embossed on the side of each foot is “Laptop Lifts” clear just like the edges of the rubber.

Installation

Installation is quite simple as one would expect but some common sense is needed when deciding on the location of each foot.

To begin, you must analyze the bottom of your notebook and decide on which Laptop Lifts to use as well as the exact placement of those feet. However, since different sizes are provided (there are two longer pieces measuring 6 inches, and four short pieces measuring 2 inches), some flexibility is possible. All pieces are half an inch wide and a quarter inch tall. It is very important that the surface you stick them to be perfectly level. The feet will fall off if the surface is not equal.

Furthermore as stated in the instructions, it is important not block any vents. If you are planning on putting them on top of a panel, make sure to cut the lift that you are using so the panel is still accessible. Moreover, ensure that there is no wobble (use a thick book to check for wobble).

Once you decide on a layout you can peel off the paper and stick your feet on. Next, use a book and apply even pressure on the book and your done.

On the other side of the spectrum, removal gets harder. As simple as it seems, you are not done after peeling off the rubber, but from there you have to start rubbing the left over adhesive with your fingers until removed to your satisfaction (this can take a while). Note, though, that once removed Laptop Lifts cannot be reused, so think well before removing them.

Overall, we found installation to be quite simple though wish removal was a bit easier and less time consuming.

Features and Durability

As simple as Laptop Lifts seem, they provide the user with a range of uses. They lift your notebook off the surface, thus improving cooling and protecting your notebook from scratches and spills. When we performed a cooling test, our temperatures dropped 5 to 6C which is acceptable for such a product, especially as they are “unique”.

Stuck on your notebook with strong adhesive, they are more or less permanent and, consequently, perfectly portable. Furthermore, the rubber used grips on nearly any surface.

The quality of the rubber is great as it is not too soft but provides a cushion while supporting your notebook. Etched on the side of each lift is “Laptop Lifts” in clear lettering.

Conclusion

DSC_0041 Simple but useful, Laptop Lifts is a portable cooling solution that is simply unique. Built with smooth rubber and strong adhesive the Lifts demonstrated their durability. However, although the strong adhesive is a positive point concerning portability, it makes removal difficult and you only have one real shot to align them right.

Pros Cons

  • Does what it is designed to do
